NZ DMC New Zealand Finals 2008 (UPDATE!)
So.. We are now 3 weeks out from the DMC’s. I hope the sets are coming along well. There was a change of entry rules last night for the NZ DMC New Zealand Finals, which is something I happen to disagree with.
Last night we were told we were now allowed to use any brand of Cartridge and Stylus we wanted because some people were finding it hard to get Ortofon’s.
Personally I think this isn’t on at all. I think we should only be using the Ortofon’s. It is part of the rules of the whole competition. Traditionally here in NZ, battle DJ’s have used Shure M44-7′s- So what? I see getting Ortofon’s as part of the challenge to be completely honest. Rules are put in place for a reason, and I think we should have some respect for the Ortofon company in general because without them, the DMC’s is absolutely nothing!! The DMC’s almost fell over because when Technics pulled out from being the competition sponsor (which is why you are allowed to use any mixer you want), Ortofon came to the rescue and became the new main sponsor, and then the rule of using Ortofon needles was put in place. (just a bit of history if you’re unsure).
I consider battling like a sport. A lot of us are rugby fans, league fans, cricket fans or what have you. If you cheat you get penalised. Cheating is going against the rules of the game and you get disqualified or an advantage goes to the opposition for your mistake, so therefore I think anyone who isn’t using Ortofon’s should be disqualified for going against the rules – eg: Denied entry. You don’t see the All Blacks or Warriors playing offside a whole game and the ref going “it’s okay!! They’re New Zealanders, they’re allowed too” do you?
A lot of us have already sorted out our Ortofon’s (including myself) which some of us have managed to scrape and save over $300.00 for a pair. It was hard work- but to enter the DMCs- it made it completely worth it. I’m not bitter about buying them- I’ve had mine since the beginning of this week and I already find them better than my Shure M44-7′s.
If every other country can follow the DMC rules then we should too. New Zealand has never followed the rules properly (as of late anyway). We have always used Vestax mixers for our National DMC competition over the years and never the Technics one. I think it’s time we stopped having double standards and followed the rules. They’re (the rules) there for a reason and as I said before- It’s all part of the challenge having Ortofon’s.

By the way: This post is purely my opinion, and it isn’t a hate post to/about Pause. Pause is my man, and I have a lot of admiration and respect for him. Without him, the DMC’s wouldn’t be happening this year. All of us DJ’s (I’m sure anyway) hold respect and appreciation for his hard work into making the DMC’s happen.

Yeyah.. Mean!!! Was gonna get some this payday but thats saved me abit of pingaz. Fark thats stink for the bradas who have already bought theirs though… (REFUNDS!!) trademe?, I thinks its an awkward situation for the brada Pause to be in though so cut him some slack Turk and be happy DMCs are back..lol
I agree that rules are rules and if you wanna enter bad enough youd get some regardless, if thats what it takes to enter then show some commitment to the artform and gettem (Im gonna go with my Shures now mind you..haha) , the flip side of the coin is “Talent” you need entrants to make the gig a good one (refer Chch battle) would be a big risk running this gig if you couldnt guarantee entrants, you know how this scene is, one minute 8 people are keen to enter nek minute 3 show up to soundcheck.. (And thats without needle/cartridge regulations) So i can understand why Pause has made it easier on people by changing the rules, its better for the gig and ultimatley the scene, there will be no excuse for not entering, and well definatley have day eliminations…hahaha atleast youl have flasher needles then us, gives you the edge.lol
Anyway I dont have a set as such but hopefully ill get through and get the chance to do my thing again one more time! Just looking forwarding to rocking it with you new bad ass tablists.
My moneys on Impact! FreekyC will be threat too, oh and Jayrasiks cuts are dynamite!!

Hmm interesting alot of solid and valid points!!!
Rules are rules if we break them that defeats thier purpose!!
But if we are looking to keep turntabilism alive and well, allowing the use of non ortofons needles could potentially increase the number of entrants, which would be mean maori mean for Aotearoa Turntablisim.
But rules are rules!!
