Last night was a mean battle. The skill and talent really came out and everyone was on form. I don’t know everyones DJ Name so i’ll do my best to break it down completely.

So Seer-1 beat Manchoo in the final taking home $500 in cash and the golden record. Lots of people have different opinons on who should have won that final round. I’m keen to see what everyone thought. Drop a comment on what you thought of the battle anyways.
Props to CPC for putting this battle on. It was the shit and I hope it becomes an annual event in Wellington each year. Don’t give up on it!!!!
Also.. Props to everyone who turned up to watch and props to the bros that didn’t make it to the top 8. It is what it is and theres always next time. I fall into this catagory harrrrdout

Congrats on all who entered! Good on Seer 1, when I read the line up I thought Manchoo will take it hands down, but this proves the scene is still alive and there is more talent lurking out there!

yea…i tho Manchoo took it out… but Seer-1 changed his scratch hand for dat tie-breaker round which prb earn him some extra points
December 1st, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Well done to the organisers of the event, what a great way to remember someone dear to you all. So now for MY opinion:
I am DJ Manchoo’s partner and I was at the battle, and I wanna let ya all know who I am before you read my opinion. Yes, you can call me biased but then that would be calling the judges tone deaf and blind – which is NOT what I am doing. And if you were at the battle you would agree with me.
WOW….WHAT A CROC OF SHIT THAT WAS – JUDGING DJ MANCHOO SECOND???? DJ Manchoo lost the scratch battle????? – PLEASE. DJ Manchoo won that battle and everyone there knew it!! Many people have said the same thing to him. Funny enough one of the Welly boys mentioned that one of the judges awarded points to Seer-1 cos he ATTEMPTED (yes, thats right) to show some skill…WHAT THE FARK????? Shit if thats the case then all of the DJ’s would have scored high for all attempts made and they all deserve a prize.
Are you serious that the judges had to go to a tie-breaker round because they couldn’t decide who won the rounds between DJ Manchoo and Seer-1? Were we at different battles???
I noticed that the SAME beat and sample WAS NOT given to BOTH competing DJ’s. How the hell are the judges supposed to compare the DJ’s skill (or lack of skill) if they have different beats and samples? Someone please answer that for me.
Before we decided to head to Welly, I said to Mike that yeah I thought he would do well – shit I even thought he would possibly even win. However, I also thought to myself that it would not be up to his skill to win him this battle, and it would be in the hands of the judges. I always knew that Mike wouldn’t walk away the winner – tooo much politics surrounding it all. Talk about De-ja-vu!! But I did think that whatever opinions people had of Mike, that their honest opinion of how he performed on the night would prevail. Fark – I was wrong and I should have known better.
Seer-1 was already bowing down to D-Rail during their final round, and you wanna tell me that Seer-1 then went on to beat DJ Manchoo???
This is in no way a dig at Seer-1.
I know Mike really well and I know that if he felt that he lost fairly – then he would be the first person to say so. It really is a pity that people felt like they had to vote against Mike in spite of who actually won. I would also be the first to let Mike know that he did really well but if he lost fairly – then so be it.
We all have footage of the battles between DJ Manchoo and Seer-1 so maybe we should put it up on here so that YOU can be the judge as to really WON.
Did you all hear the crowd go silent when Seer-1 was annonced as the winner? Fark, we could all hear a pin drop. Its because everyone was in complete DISBELIEF. I actually thought that they had called Seer-1 as the runner up – and NOT the winner.
Turksta I would prefer that you leave my opinion up on your blog so that everyone – and I dont care who reads it – can see what I think.
What a croc of shit that was because I know that you ALL know who really won that battle. At least have the balls to say it. And if ya wanna have something to say about my opinion then go for it – don’t hassle Mike because of my opinion. Or have me up about it when ya see me – I’m open to a discussion on the matter.
Thanks
Jud

I’m going say that I am surprised of the result of the final.
However to be fair, I am going to try and get some video content off some of the bros so everyone can have an opinion of the final battle and discussion can be said. That way, I think opinion can be fully fair and discussed.
What y’all reckon?

whoa…like to see this battle.
December 2nd, 2008 at 3:47 am
DJ battles are always flawed cause of wack judging….look at the world DMC’s- a perfect example. There’s always guys in the final 12 who make you go ‘what- how the fuck did they make it’…..it kind of comes with the territory.
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:35 pm
I’m definately keen to see this footage from the battle, sounds very controversial.
December 2nd, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Yeah bro… keen to see tha footage. Controversial alright. Who is Seer-1?
I guess for me, Manchoo would have the upper hand (Ex DMC Champ), and i’ve seen him jam recently, still has it!

Videos are around on the net, but not good quality
Judges were myself, Kerb & Alphabet
I can only speak for myself but i call it as i see it, no politics, no spite and no favoritism.
Joe if you can get footage of the whole event that would be dope, cause some of the battles were a lot closer than they seemed.
I have asked a lot people that were there, what they though and it has been very mixed but a reoccurring comment was some djs were very repetitive doing the same thing every round.
Anyway the video don’t lie so if anybody got some clear footage post it
Also real impressed with good up & coming talent and the strong number of entries

ok ok so i had a read now…
“DJ battles are always flawed cause of wack judging”
you cant call RAW, ALPHABETHEAD or KERB wack at all!
The rules-
Head to Head battle rounds:
The beats will change for each round. All beats will be chosen at random. You will be given a sample at random.
that is all… haha
December 3rd, 2008 at 6:50 pm
Thanks Kim for putting the other 2 DJ’s into my list. Apologies to Ruse and Gargamel for missing you guys out.
As to Raw. Sup bro- I will see what I can get in Quality video. Wil K has offered me his footage from camera to DVD. I will try and rip it at Decent Quality and throw it on Youtube or something similar if I can.
December 3rd, 2008 at 8:48 pm
it didnt help that he same tempo was used for the beats pretty much throughout the night only 2 beats above 110 were played so DJs couldnt really do alot of patterns and different structures to the beats i just felt like the beats could have varied more therefore DJs could express there cuts a little more better thats probably why the same patterns were coming out because the tempo never changed,Thats something to think about
December 4th, 2008 at 8:14 am
Hmm, a possible rematch in the future?
December 4th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Every round should be treated independently so it shouldn’t matter if DJ’s use their trump card every round does it? Quarters, semis and finals are all different and should be treated as so. If judges were listening to the DJ throughout the whole night and judging based on that, then the winner would be the most consistent throughout. In the final, the winner choked his first set didn’t he?
Props to all the DJ’s that entered. At the end of the day, hip-hop is the winner here!
December 4th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
“Every round should be treated independently”
Yes i agree
“it shouldn’t matter if DJ’s use their trump card every round”
Yes & No
If you were to compare it to a B-boy Battle, it would be like one guy comes out with some dope footwork and then the guy he is battling comes out & does a power move like headspin or flares and doesn’t really show any other style, the power move would most probably win, but if the same guy pulls out the same moves ever round by the time it gets to the final the moves are not as impressive.
For the record i judged the Final
Round # 1 = Manchoo
Round # 2 = Seer 1
Round # 3 = Manchoo
Tie Breaker = Manchoo
Alphabet & Kerb are well respected Dj’s and have nothing to gain by making Manchoo lose so I am putting this up to give you a different angle to look at cos they might have been looking for different things than i was looking for.
I watched the battle between Spell & Manchoo again on on Spell’s blog and its a lot close than i first thought, watching that you could easily say Spell was more funky and demonstrated more technique on both record & fader but on the night i went for Manchoo.
Again Im just putting this out there as none of the other judges have replied, all depends what your looking for style & finesse or speed & technique.
No matter what Manchoo is a true Champion and deserves all the accolades he achieved in his DJing and I’m glade he had the courage to come down and enter cos there are a lot of other Djs, younger and older that should be entering if they want to keep the scene elevating and alive.

Nice Comments RAW it was A Very Contraversal Battle no Doubt about that and DAM this battle has bought every DJ out of the Wood works to comment hahaha in some respects i think it has revitalised the scene
What Ever Happened Happened yo and theres not much that can be done now personally i think everyone has sorta gone off track as to what the real purpose of all this has been about its not about Welly its Not about Auckland its just about keeping the Turntable Scene Alive going Forward but keeping things fair and true
I hope this Battle gets everyone Fired up for another Round of battles sometime in the Near Future it has definitley created a Fire Storm hahahahaha
DJ Manchoo
Shouts To RAW yo TOP DOGG Cuzzy

@steps: ‘you cant call RAW, ALPHABETHEAD or KERB wack at all!’
When I said that djing comps are ‘always flawed cause of wack judging,’ I wasn’t calling Raw, Alphabethead or Kerb ‘wack’- when i wrote it I had no idea who the judges were, and being that I wasn’t there the comment was aimed at Dj battles IN GENERAL and a reply to Jud’s comment, in which he gave a pretty firm opinion on the judges, decsion… note: ‘dj battles will always be flawed,’ not, ‘the 4-tek dj was flawed by wack judging.’
I was simply saying bad calls will ALWAYS be made in competitions.
On an extra note, I think some of the ILLEST djs in the world have made bad judging calls – so many factors can come into it – and they only get one chance to listen – its not like they can watch a replay and really cement their opinions like the person watching the video.
It is the nature of subjective ‘music’ competitions, and everyone (who has battled long enough) has had decsions go against them that could’ve gone the other way.
