My Relationship With Major Flavours Vol. 1

What Up People! One of my best friends and one of my major influences as a DJ is giving away his first ever comercially released CD for free! This CD opened up so many doors for DJ’s and MC’s around the country and it deserves a shit load of respect. This CD changed my life when I heard it. It was the first ever full length mixtape I ever heard. The way the songs were mixed, chopped up and blended amazed the shit out of me.
I was in 4th form at high school when this CD was released and from then on I haven’t looked back since. I had of course heard scratching in songs before and wondered how it was done, but the scratch breaks to me as a kid were amazing. Now days.. I can’t live without having a jam once a day. I always look back and think how crazy it is that a CD changed my life- it’s nuts.
A year or so later I stepped to DJ Sir-Vere at Beat Merchants and introduced myself. We had spoken before online through hiphopNZ.com and stuff. I was pretty star struck at the time (as any 15/16 year old would be) but chilled out a bit afterwards. I looked at records etc and made my decision that DJing was DEFINITELY for me. I saved hard from the job I had and managed to score some Turntables on Interest Free Hire Purchase (with the help of my dad being a guarantor). I was looking around for a Mixer after I got my turnies and asking around online for advice. Poroufessor told me that Sir-Vere & Ali were selling a Vestax 05 Pro II for $700 (at the time they were $1299). So i stepped to him again and asked about it. I managed to scrounge together the exact amount of cash and he hooked me up BIG TIME. In between all this I was always in clubs underage (LOL) going to as many DJ Gigs as I possibly could to see how all the established DJ’s were playing out and doing their thing, so I always saw the dude and we said what up etc.
After getting into DJing properly and practising etc. It wasn’t long after my favourite radio show (The Late Nite Hype) had finished up on Mai FM. I was shopping for Records one day and stepped to him again and asked if I could chill out with him on his new Radio Show @ Channel Z (The Boost Mobile Hook Up Show). He said yes and I from that point I chilled out and helped him out with Gig Knowledge etc (I always knew what was going on around Auckland back then). I was part of the show every week from that time on. When The show finished up we moved to Kiwi FM (Channel Z rebranded) and it was on air everyday! I was a weekly feature on a Wednesday still and chilled out and did my thing. We ended up being good friends at this point and always talked about shit and music. The show Ended and was quiet for ages although we were always in contact and one day he rang me up about doing the Late Nite Hype with him on Sunday nights at Mai FM. He told me he needed someone to host and help out while he DJ’ed as it was quite hard for just one person to control. In my head I was thinking holy shit because this was the show I grew up in my teens listening too religiously every week for a long time and I had the chance to be apart of it. Naturally I said yes and we are now 215 deep! Doing the Late Nite Hype with Sirvere has shaped me as a DJ and inspired me on how I play, cut, mix, and select songs in a live format. Our show is one out of 3 Fully Live Hip Hop DJ shows on Auckland’s Mainstream Radio Stations (the other 2 are Trueschool on bFM and Urbanology with Substance on George FM).
This weekend is the FINAL show of the Late Nite Hype ever. At this stage it isn’t going to be resurrected. The reason why it’s finishing up is because Sir-Vere is doing a daily segment on Mai FM’s Drive Time Show called Major Flavours Radio- Watch out for that in 2010! It’s going to be awesome! Make sure you tune in.
It’s amazing how one CD changed my life and thankful how Sir-Vere gave me the chances to be involved with him on his radio shows over the years and I fully owe him for the invaluable experiences I have had from being there. For new DJ’s out there- don’t be ashamed to step to your local influences for advice, help and just to say what up. Don’t listen to people if they call you a dick-rider, a groupie or anything along those lines. Do it anyway! You’ll be surprised with the reception these guys will give you.
Major Flavours 1. You changed my Life, I have no regrets!

Hard bro… I OWE you BIG TIME for mixer. Saved me like 500 bucks!! Also thanks for the little message towards the end
Man.. all those gigs I went to when I was young.. I used to rock on my own to watch guys like yourself and Phil play. I treated it like school. I used to study how you guys mixed and stuff to get an idea for everything starting out. It also ended up making some good friends doing that. Those days were agggeesss ago. hahaha.
Hope things are well my bro
