The Auckland Council are putting on a gig in South Auckland later this year which will contain a DJ Battle.

1st Prize is $1000

The format is as follows:

8 Man Elimination competion (DMC style format) Prelim round, Semi Final and Grand Final.

2-2:30 min sets (I’m going to suggest 3 min sets)

2 x Serato setups are provided (Rane mixer) and 2 Technics 1200s at each station. Traktor if prefered. No cdjs will be available.

Who’s keen? Apparently the judges are going to be Ned Roy, Manuel Bundy & DJ LowKey.

Drop a comment if you’re keen. If there aren’t enough entrants, the council will pull the battle.

Last week my crew the Villains and I got the opportunity to open for the GZA (Wu-Tang) in Ohakune and Welli alongside local DJ’s D-Rail, Affiliate and a bunch of other dope local acts.

Had an awesome time on the road and it was cool to be able to kick it with GZA and DJ Mathematics and shoot a video clip in Welli for JB’s new song “WAR”. Tonight sees the opening of the Canteen DJ School which is run by the homie DJ Spence.

A lot of us would have had something to do with Spence during his years at the DMC Store in Auckland City (before it was re-branded as Mix Foundation). He is now the program co-ordinator at the Canteen DJ School.

Tonight is the grand opening and will surely be a piece of NZ Turntablism History that you won’t want to miss. I’ve never seen a line up in one room for a jam and it’s all for charity (which is fuckin’ awesome!).

DJ Reminise has just informed me that NO ONE has confirmed with him for the Turntablist Battle he is planning to hold at Lounge Bar in Auckland City on the 25th of June.

I am sure there are people out there who are keen! This battle is open to anyone and not just Aucklanders. Out of towners, if your down.. Express Interest.

There are 2 battles. 1 Turntablist Battle and 1 Club Battle. The Turntablist battle will be on a single night and the club battle will be spread out over heats and the winners of each heat go into the final.

The details for each battle are as follows:

Turntablist Battle:

The fundamentals of scratching & beat juggling are mandatory…. See more
The one-on-one, sudden death makes this the hardest & most intense DJ Battle.
Vinyl records & Serato in Absolute mode only.

2 DJ Setups – 2 Technics SL-1210 Turntables & a Rane TTM57 mixer (no effects or modifications allowed)

- 3min Prelims where 8 DJs will Advance to Quarter Finals.
- Quarter Finals 8 DJs head to head 2 rounds each / 90sec sets.
- Semi Finals 4 DJs head to head / 2 rounds / 90sec each
- Final 2 DJs head to head / 2 rounds / 2min each

Immediate judgement takes place on stage with judges showing their No.1 or 2 card to the audience.

Harmony of set, Excitement.

Originality:
Creativity, Innovation, Composition.

Skills:
Technical ability, Difficulty, Combos.

Structure of set, Arrangement.

Vinyl records & Serato in Absolute mode only.

2 Technics SL-1210 Turntables & a Rane TTM57 mixer (no CDJ’s are allowed or provided)

Time Limit:
30min club set

The Music:
Original tracks only (no remixes, party breaks & etc)

The Dates:
Heats are on June 4th, June 11th, and June 18th. The Grand Final is on June 25th.

Must supply your own needles, headphones, slipmats & vinyl.

Whos entering??? I am!!!!!

They were scheduled for July, but has confirmed on his blog that the 2010 DMC’s aren’t going to happen.

He has said the following in a post on his blog:

After a lot of consideration I have decided not to run the DMC’s this year. It’s partly because I have no time or money to run it this year. But it is mainly due to the lack of up in coming talent. Apart from DJ Impact and Wil K the standard hasn’t progressed enough to warrant running the competition.

I offered it to a couple of peeps but everyone is on the same page with how I’m feeling.

Maybe if the scene changes we’ll look at doing it again.

So there is is people. No DMC’s this year.

I found this on Facebook browsing around today and I think there’s a few DJ’s from NZ that should probably enter this DJ battle. All the info you need to know is below:

What is the WTK Worldwide Scratch Battle??

The “WTK WORLDWIDE SCRATCH BATTLE 2010″ is an international online scratch battle.

That battle will carefully be judged by a professional jury.

The concept is simple:

Each contestant must download the WildStyle looper 3 ( http://www.myspace.com/wtkbattle / http://www.yourlooper.com ) which contains several beats, record a video set of 1min30 and then send a video of his performance using one of the 15 proposed beats.

Youtube and Beat4Battle forum will be hosting the videos of all participants.

Best sets will be rewarded with prizes from our partners. (Vestax, Serato, Pro-x-fade)

The promotion of the event will be done via several types of media such as websites, specialized press, blogs, specialized forums, webzines to make sure to cover the largest number of participants.

The Rules:

1. Any Dj of any country can sign up
2. Dj’s must have a scratch routine of 1min30s on the beat of their choice but it has to from the Wildstyle looper 3.
3. The scratch routine must be video recorder in “one shot” and sent on youtube with the title and the following tag: WTK WORLDWIDE SCRATCH BATTLE 2010: DJ “YourName” before April 30, 2010.
4. All post production work, video or sound editing will automatically result in disqualification.
   However we’ll recommend the sound output to be recorded seperately for a quality purpose. Please make sure the recording is done under decent condition; Bad lighting/framing can be harmful to your performance.
5. DJs will only use real vinyl or timecoded vinyl but no CD player, no effects, no instruments other than turntables.
6. The judges will award points to the dj’s of their choice based on technicality and musicality of scratches (3 points for first, 2 points for second and 1 point for third).
7. Then the judges will have 1 week to discuss and do a final count of the votes.
